Art Imitates Life?

So after days of 'boycotting' in my own little way, I decided to go ahead and listen to Rhianna's latest single.  Just reading the lyrics on NecoleBitchie I figured it would be hella depressing, but I didnt realize how much until the very end of the song (if you've heard it then you know what I'm referring to).

The song has already stirred controversy, with Tiffany Evans saying it was satanic, Chuck Evans (the producer) saying its just provocative art not to be taken literally, to Neyo (the writer) saying it was nothing more than an 'interesting topic over a crazy beat'.  Rhianna, of course, has yet to say anything.  Kind of funny that she's fresh off an a** whipping from CB and now this song *smh*

I personally am kind of tired of industry folk going back and forth over the meaning of their music.  One week they're saying 'oh music is a reflection of me, what I've been through, how I express myself when I'm happy, sad, etc.', but the minute there's controversy all of a sudden its just 'art' and shouldn't be taken literally. Whether artists want to admit it or not music is a powerful tool that has the ability to influence moods. How many times have you heard a love song that made your loneliness feel magnified, or if you were in a relationship it made you want to tell that person you love them?  I for one am quick to throw on some Tupac when I need that 'f*ck the world' attitude because somebody has pissed me off.  This is just the song that teenager needs who's being mistreated in school, abused at home, feels that life is hopeless and there's nothing left to do. There's a certain amount of responsibility that comes with (or should come with) fame, and some people need to take it a bit more serious. Point blank that shit is depressing...

Anywho if it pleases you  ~  Listen and Download
